Grievance & Appeals Processes
Texas A&M University is committed to providing an educational and work climate that is conducive to the personal and professional development of each individual.
Through its commitment, the university has developed procedures for students to pursue grievances within the university community. Each student has the responsibility to be fully acquainted with and to comply with the Texas A&M University Student Rules. Faculty may have a role in these grievance procedures if the student feels that they have faced discrimination in the class environment based on the student’s disability.
Appeal Procedure
Disability Resources is committed to promoting an inclusive environment where every student can fully participate in the educational opportunities, activities and services offered by Texas A&M.
Disability Resources determines eligibility for accommodations and identifies reasonable accommodations through an interactive process. This Appeal Procedure may be followed when a student disagrees with a decision made on eligibility for accommodations or on accommodation request(s):
- When a student disagrees with a decision made on accommodations or eligibility, they should first meet with their Access Coordinator (AC) to discuss their concerns. The AC will gather information from the student and attempt to resolve the student’s concern.
- When the student’s concern cannot be resolved with the AC, the student can request a review by the Disability Resources’ Decision, Review, and Consultation (DRC) committee. The AC will present all available information to the DRC committee. The student can provide written or verbal information to their AC for the consideration of the DRC committee. The AC will communicate the committee’s decision to the student.
- If the student is dissatisfied with a decision reached by the DRC committee, they may request a meeting with the Director of Disability Resources. The Director or their designee will review all information, as well as consult with the university ADA Coordinator and all other relevant parties, in order to make a final decision.
Student/Instructor Disagreement
If the student and the classroom instructor disagree on the accommodation request, they should first try to resolve the matter together. If a resolution cannot be reached, Disability Resources staff can facilitate discussion which should involve the student and the instructor. If that discussion does not resolve the dispute, the matter follows 46.2 Student Grievance Procedures of the University’s Student Rules.
Discrimination
Students believing that they have been subjected to discrimination based on a disability may use one or more procedures to resolve their grievance. These procedures are outlined under 45. Discrimination and Discrimination Appeals of the University’s Student Rules.
- General information and options for reporting can be found at the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX.
